Dr. Wang received his MD from Tong-Ji Medical School, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), and served as an attending physician of the third affiliated hospital in the HUST. He studied at the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), where he earned his PhD. After that, Dr. Wang then held a position as an Associate Professor at the CAS while simultaneously worked a post-doctoral fellowship at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. When Dr. Wang joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1999, he was a Research Associate. He was subsequently promoted to Assistant Professor and Associate Professor.
He has a long history of working on gene- and cell-based therapies combined with tissue engineering for tissue regeneration (muscle and bone) and diseases (heart and lung), mainly by using recombinant adeno-associated viral, lenti-, and retro-viral vectors. He has excellent working experience on the viral vector-mediated mini-dystrophin gene replacement and anti-inflammation via NF-kappB inhibition to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Dr. Wang’s current research interests include:
· Vascular–targeted Gene Therapy for Tissue Regeneration
· Gene therapy for the Treatment of Heart, Lung, and Blood Disorders
· Gene- and Cell-activated 3D Bioscaffolds for Tissue Regeneration
· Gene Replacement and Anti-inflammation for the Treatment of Neuromuscular Genetic Disease
Since 2008, Dr. Wang has authored/co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications (Science, Science Translational Medicine, Circulation, Biomaterials, Stem Cell Research and Therapy, and Gene Therapy etc.), 4 review papers, and 6 book chapters. He has published over 90 abstracts in national/international conferences. He also participated on the Editorial Boards of several professional journals and grant review panels (DOD and NIH).
