Dr. Yoder completed his undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry at Malone University, his MA at Indiana State University, and MD at Indiana University School of Medicine. After completing a pediatrics residency and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, he returned to Indiana University as an assistant professor of pediatrics in 1985. Dr. Yoder was awarded tenure in 1991 with subsequent promotion to professor of pediatrics, biochemisty, and molecular biology. He was named the Richard and Pauline Klingler Professor of Pediatrics prior to promotion to the rank of Indiana University Distinguished Professor in 2013.
Dr. Yoder joined the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in 2023. His research interests include identifying the origin, mechanisms of mobilization, and role of endothelial colony forming cells (ECFCs) as circulating and resident endothelial repopulating cells for vascular repair and regeneration. He also collaborates on studies to identify molecular pathways that can be used to directly reprogram tissue fibroblasts in situ into vasculogenic states that promote rescue of tissue hypoxia and ischemia. Dr. Yoder has published >300 peer-reviewed articles, >50 book chapters, co-edited 6 textbooks, and delivered >200 invited lectures.
