Ahmed S Abouhashem
Appointment Rank: Core-Resident
Dr. Ahmed S Abouhashem is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on cellular reprogramming, with a particular emphasis on uncovering mechanisms that drive cell state transitions and systematic shifts in gene expression profiles across distinct cellular identities.
To identify key reprogramming factors, Dr. Abouhashem applies advanced machine learning techniques and network science approaches to analyze single-cell and spatially resolved multi-omics datasets. His work involves the analysis of single-cell trajectories and gene regulatory networks to identify master regulators governing cell state transitions, as well as the investigation of the tissue microenvironment associated with distinct cellular states. Currently, he is studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying healing and non-healing in diabetic foot ulcers, aiming to identify strategies to promote regeneration in chronic, non-healing wounds.
Dr. Abouhashem earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Zagazig University in Egypt. He received both his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Biotechnology from the American University in Cairo, and worked as an assistant scientist at Indiana University.
