Alejandro Nieponice MD, PhD
Dr. Alejandro Nieponice is currently the Chief of The Esophageal Unit at Hospital Universitario Fundación Favaloro in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is also a faculty member of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Nieponice’s main goal is to foster clinical translation of novel robotic and minimally invasive approaches by bridging his surgical and research background.
He has developed a program of interventional endoscopy for the treatment of early esophageal cancer and achalasia having one of the largest series of POEM in LatinAmerica. He has also pioneered the esophageal robotic program performing the first Robotic Esophagectomy in Argentina and has one of the largest volumes in Latin America.
His work has been recognized with more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, and several book chapters. He has delivered a TED talk about robotic surgery and AI. He is currently a founding member and chair of the international committee at the American Foregut Society (AFS). He is the president of the Argentinian Society of Gastroenterology and he is a full member of the Argentinean Surgical Society (MAAC).
