
MaCalus Hogan

Dr. MaCalus Hogan is a nationally recognized orthopaedic surgeon, educator, and translational researcher specializing in foot and ankle injury, tendon healing, and healthcare delivery innovation. He is Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, Chief of the UPMC Orthopaedic Service Line, and Senior Medical Director for Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Services at UPMC Health Plan. He also holds joint appointments in Bioengineering, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Katz Graduate School of Business.
Dr. Hogan’s NIH- and DOD-supported research focuses on biologic and cell-based therapies for tendon and cartilage regeneration. He leads the Foot and Ankle Injury Research (FAIR) group and has authored over 140 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, and abstracts. His work has advanced biologic adjuvants in foot and ankle surgery and developed novel treatment strategies for sports injuries and degenerative conditions. In collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh Biodynamics Lab, his team uses dynamic biplane radiography to investigate in vivo joint mechanics and functional outcomes.
Beyond the lab, Dr. Hogan is a national leader in value-based care. He has co-chaired UPMC’s Centers of Excellence and CJR Programs, developed bundled payment models, and helped redesign clinical pathways that improve care quality and reduce costs. He also drives system-wide safety and innovation initiatives through the UPMC Wolff Center.
His honors include the 2020 AOFAS J. Leonard Goldner Award, Becker’s “10 Orthopedic Surgeons to Know” (2022), Castle Connolly Top Doctors (2021–2023), and the 2024 “20 People to Know in Healthcare.” He was also named a 2024 CNX Community Impact Champion by the Pittsburgh Penguins and a Chuck Cooper Foundation Leadership Award recipient.
Dr. Hogan earned his M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC.He was the recipient of a National Institutes of Health Training Grant and served as a Musculoskeletal Tissue Repair and Regeneration Research Fellow at the University of Virginia Health System, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he also completed his orthopaedic surgical residency training. This was followed by a foot and ankle fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. Following the completion of his training in 2013, Dr. Hogan joined UPMC.
