
Michael Boninger

Michael Boninger, MD, is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, with joint appointments in Bioengineering, Rehabilitation Science and Technology, and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. He is also affiliated with the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. A physician-engineer by training, Dr. Boninger’s work centers on improving function and independence for individuals with disabilities through the development and application of assistive, rehabilitative, and regenerative technologies.
With a research portfolio spanning over 300 peer-reviewed publications and multiple U.S. patents, Dr. Boninger’s work has been supported by major federal agencies including the NIH, VA, DoD, and NIDILRR. His lab has contributed significantly to the advancement of mobility technologies, including wheelchair biomechanics, brain-computer interface systems, and neuroprosthetics. He also has a strong record of mentorship; his trainees have earned over 50 national awards.
In addition to his scientific work, Dr. Boninger serves as Associate Dean for Sustainability at Pitt’s School of Medicine and Chief Medical Sustainability Officer at UPMC. In these roles, he is leading efforts to reduce the healthcare sector’s environmental footprint and integrate climate health education across medical training.
Dr. Boninger earned his BS in mechanical engineering and MD from The Ohio State University and completed residency at the University of Michigan, where he served as chief resident. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in recognition of his contributions to rehabilitation science, health innovation, and leadership
