
Raj Ramanan

Dr. Ramanan is an Associate Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and an attending intensivist in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. He completed his undergraduate training at McGill University in Montreal, Canada followed by medical school training at Manipal University, India. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine, fellowship in Critical Care Medicine and Advanced Cardiothoracic Critical Care and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), all at UPMC.
Dr. Ramanan currently serves as Medical Director of ECMO, as well as Co-Chair of the Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Leadership Council, for UPMC. He is also the current ECMO Education Director for UPMC Procirca, developing and overseeing all their ECMO education and training courses. On an international level, Dr. Ramanan is the Education Committee Chair of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO).
His clinical research interests are primarily focused on the use of temporary mechanical circulatory and respiratory support for cardiogenic shock and acute respiratory failure, respectively. He has published peer-reviewed articles, authored book chapters and delivered lectures internationally on these topics.
